These two datasets are not connected, and this site does not connect them

They sit here because they are built the same way, not because they describe the same thing. Nothing on either site is derived from the other.

Notifiable disease surveillance is not about food. The disease atlas covers 138 conditions — measles, pertussis, Lyme disease, tuberculosis and the rest — reported to CDC through a system with no relationship to recalls. A handful are foodborne; none of their counts comes from recall data.
The food atlas does hold 59 CDC foodborne outbreak investigations, and none of them is linked to a recall record — no agency publishes a key that would tie a notice to a specific recall, and this project does not guess.
Do not compare counts across the two. They come from different systems with different reporting rules, lags and revision behaviour.

What both projects promise

Primary federal sources only — openFDA, FDA, USDA FSIS, CDC, US Census Bureau. No aggregators, no third-party trackers.
Nothing is inferred. A value the agency did not publish renders as what it actually is, never as a guess and never as a zero.
Derived values are marked. Anything computed — a geocoded point, a parsed state list, a category — is visually distinct from what the agency said.
Neither is real-time. Both carry a permanent banner showing when the data was fetched and how far behind the source runs.
